Like everything in life, over time your treasured books and bindings can suffer the passing of the years and require a little love and attention to restore them to their former glory
Our skilled bookbinders are highly trained in book restoration and, based on the condition of your book can employ a wide range of techniques to carry out superficial or full book restoration
Barnard & Westwood work primarily with leather, paper, vellum or cloth bindings. We have a wide selection of covering materials at our disposal and will always endeavour to use complimentary shades and styles in keeping with the original design.
If using leather, the skins can be dyed to a certain pantone colour or we can use traditional bookbinding dyes to ‘stain’ the colour of the leather to a darker shade.
However, if a book has deteriorated so much that it is beyond repair, our bookbinding team can still create beautiful slip cases or presentation boxes to keep the book safe and avoid pages falling out and being lost.
Although old books often require entirely new cases, we will always attempt to salvage original features from the spine or front cover such as foiled wording etc. to give the new book as much of the original character as possible.
